For Immediate Release

Washington DC - December 22, 2009

RPS condemns the senseless attack on a Syrian laborer by unknown assailants. A Syrian mother of a 17-year old should not, in addition to being a victim of the Assad regime, become also a victim of random killing. It is too high a price to pay for any mother, in any country.

While RPS understands the frustration some Lebanese feel towards the Hariri visit to Syria, our hope is that this cowardly act is not at all connected to the visit.

Because killing for the Assad regime comes naturally and because the Syrian regime may be looking for excuses to smother Lebanon further, RPS does not discount either that the Syrian regime may be behind this heinous act. It fits perfectly with older patterns of behavior, especially when al-Moallem demands that the results of the inquiry into the incident be provided to Syria.

RPS sends its condolences to the family of the Syrian laborer (Name remains unknown) who died needlessly.
